As the world turns its attention to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games later this month, Artists Rights Society is proud to highlight the contributions of our represented artists to this year’s global celebration of sport and culture. The Olympics have long been a showcase not just for athletic prowess, but also for artistic expression, and this year is no exception.

Far from being simply ornamental, these artworks enrich the Olympic experience for all. They serve as catalysts for reflection and inspiration, touching both competitors and observers, while embodying the core Olympic principles of excellence, camaraderie, and mutual respect – setting the stage for a truly inspiring opportunity in art licensing.

Licensing Olympic-themed art during the Summer Games allows you to capitalize on the excitement and global focus surrounding this event. By incorporating these into your projects, you can creatively align your brand with the spirit of the Games and capture the enthusiasm of millions of viewers worldwide.

Take a look at how four ARS member artists work across steel, resin, wool, and paint to contribute their unique talents to this year’s Games.

Mathieu Lehanneur, 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Torch

Mathieu Lehanneur’s design for the 2024 Olympic torch was chosen for its innovative approach and symbolic representation of Paris and the Olympic spirit. Crafted from recycled steel, the torch boasts a sleek, symmetrical shape that draws inspiration from the iconic Seine river. In line with Paris 2024’s commitment to sustainability, the torch is carbon-neutral and uses a bioethanol fuel mixture, producing a distinctive yellow flame with blue edges. Lehanneur’s design not only represents the values of the Olympics but also showcases French creativity and the host city’s dedication to environmental responsibility.

Laurent Perbos, La Beaute et le Geste

Laurent Perbos’ installation on the steps of the Palais Bourbon represents a fusion of classical art and modern sports. Inspired by the timeless ‘Venus de Milo’, each sculpture symbolizes a unique sport —basketball, boxing, javelin throwing, para-archery, surfing, and tennis — and is brought to life in vibrant hues that evoke Greek polychromy and the Olympic rings. The artist has reimagined the armless Venus by giving her limbs and equipping her with sport-specific attributes to symbolize the “beautiful gesture” in sports. The installation will be on display through September 22, 2024.

Marjane Satrapi, Olympic Games Tapestry

Marjane Satrapi’s Olympic-themed tapestry, measuring nearly thirty feet wide and crafted over three years, intricately captures the essence of the 2024 Games. Symbolizing the theme of gender parity, one panel vividly depicts male and female athletes leaping in unison beneath the iconic arch of Paris’s Eiffel Tower, marking a historic moment as the Games feature equal participation for the first time. In another panel, Satrapi celebrates the inclusion of breakdancing and skateboarding, two dynamic sports recently added to the Olympic program.

Lolo Nawak and the Mural Collective, Titanic Fresco

Covering over 24,000 square feet and visible from above, Titanesque adorns the Olympic swimming pool in Saint-Denis, France. This immense mural portrays a giant figure floating in water, evoking a sense of calmness when seen from a bird’s-eye view. It was crafted by Lolo Nawak and the Mural Collective, with collaboration from two classes of local elementary school students.

From Mathieu Lehanneur’s innovative Olympic torch design, symbolizing Parisian spirit and sustainability, to Laurent Perbos’ vibrant sculptures at the Palais Bourbon, blending classical art with modern sports, each piece tells a unique story of creativity and cultural significance. Marjane Satrapi’s monumental tapestry and the Mural Collective’s Titanesque further exemplify the diverse artistic expressions shaping the narrative of these Games.

The global excitement surrounding the Summer Games presents an exceptional opportunity to capitalize on the sports frenzy with licensing opportunities through Artists Rights Society. Whether you’re drawn to the artwork by these renowned artists or seeking sports-themed images that embody the spirit of the Games, ARS is dedicated to helping you discover your perfect match.
