Renowned ARS member Pablo Picasso is celebrated for his revolutionary contributions to 20th-century art and his diverse, innovative styles. Licensing Picasso’s work for a commercial or scholarly project brings unparalleled artistic prestige and historical significance, enriching the project’s creative and intellectual appeal.
Picasso in Film
Pablo Picasso’s 1910 work The Guitarist plays a starring role in RIPLEY, the new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, streaming on Netflix. Throughout RIPLEY, Picasso’s artwork is strategically placed to underscore key moments.
The fragmented forms and distorted perspectives characteristic of Picasso’s Cubist art mirror the fragmented nature of Tom Ripley’s identity. The use of Picasso’s imagery in this context provides rich, evocative visual content that enhances narrative and thematic elements.

Picasso in Publications
Picasso’s expansive oeuvre offers a wealth of subjects and themes that inspire numerous publications, exemplified by titles such as Picasso: Seven Decades of Drawing by Christine Poggi, A Life of Picasso: The Minotaur Years, 1933-1943 by John Richardson, and Picasso: The Impossible Collection by Diana Widmaier Picasso.
Publications are at the heart of our work at Artists Rights Society, both with commercial and as well scholarly publishers. Scholarship on Picasso attracts a wide audience due to the artist’s profound influence on modern art, his diverse range of styles and subjects, and the enduring fascination with his life and creative process.

Picasso’s work has long been a cornerstone of successful promotional campaigns, enhancing the impact of a project and captivating audiences. A notable example is Apple Inc.’s 2013 collaboration with ARS and Pablo Picasso for a global campaign. The campaign featured Picasso’s Femme au Beret Rouge et au Col de Fourrure (1937) on billboards and other outdoor advertisements, introducing the newest iPad.
Just as Picasso revolutionized the art world with Cubism, Apple transformed technology with the iPad. Picasso’s work emphasized the iPad as a cultural and artistic game-changer, while simultaneously broadening its appeal to diverse audiences.

Picasso’s name represents innovation, mastery, and a profound connection to art history. ARS can assist you with the licensing process, allowing you to incorporate Picasso’s legacy into your project, whether it’s merchandise, an advertisement, a publication, or a film.
Picasso’s intellectual property is protected by copyright, so obtaining a license is a necessary step to utilize his work in your project. Before submitting a licensing request, there are steps to take which vary slightly depending on the type of project. These steps include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare the details of your request including the image title and year of the Picasso work (or works) you would like to license.
- Consider where you will obtain a high-resolution image file. While you secure copyright permission from ARS, you will need to concurrently secure a high-resolution image file of the work. We recommend the image bank company Art Resource.
- Prepare a layout of the project. How will the work be displayed or reproduced within the book, social media post, advertisement or product?
- If the use is for video, film, or TV, we will need information on how long the image will be on screen, as well as if the image is ‘referenced’ by the actors on screen or ‘not referenced.’
- Please note that manipulation and cropping of images is discouraged.
- Also keep in mind that Picasso’s credit line will need to be featured within your project.
- Permissions can take time. The Picasso Administration will review your request via ARS and may require additional details.
