For decades, the bold, revolutionary work of Art Deco painter and ARS member Tamara de Lempicka was undervalued and disparaged, especially as a queer female artist pushing boundaries in a male-dominated era. But now, Lempicka’s singular creative vision is receiving the popular and critical acclaim it has long deserved.

The new Broadway musical “Lempicka” represents a major “work of recuperation,” shining a spotlight on the artist’s trailblazing life and oeuvre. As the show’s creators put it, Lempicka’s “brash, gleaming” paintings embodied a spirit of liberation that presaged the modern feminist movement.

This theatrical revival is just one part of Lempicka’s full-fledged renaissance sweeping the art world. Concurrent with the Broadway premiere, Sotheby’s is hosting “The World of Tamara,” a high-profile exhibition celebrating her iconic works. And in October of this year, the de Young Museum in San Francisco will mount Lempicka’s first major U.S. retrospective.

For brands and companies seeking to align themselves with one of the 20th century’s most influential artistic voices, the time to officially license Lempicka’s imagery with ARS is now. Her work has already permeated pop culture through appearances in projects by Madonna and luxury brands like Van Cleef & Arpels. But as this resurgence demonstrates, there is an untapped opportunity to be at the forefront of Lempicka’s skyrocketing relevance.
