Marina Abramović is one of the most influential figures in contemporary performance art. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Abramović has challenged conventional ideas about the body, endurance, presence, and the relationship between artist and audience. Her work has expanded the possibilities of performance while creating a powerful visual vocabulary that continues to resonate across contemporary art, fashion, publishing, film, and popular culture.
About Marina Abramović
Born in Belgrade in 1946, Marina Abramović emerged as a major figure in performance art during the 1970s. Her practice frequently explores physical and psychological endurance, vulnerability, duration, and the relationship between performer and viewer. Rather than treating the artwork as a static object, Abramović has often made her own body and the passage of time central to the artistic experience.
Her performances have been presented internationally at major museums and cultural institutions, establishing Abramović as a defining figure in contemporary art. Works such as Rhythm 0, The Artist Is Present, and her collaborations with Ulay have become important reference points in the history of performance art.
Abramović’s work is particularly recognizable for its directness and intensity. Photography, video, documentation, and other visual records of her performances have become important ways for audiences to encounter and study her practice.
