Henri Matisse’s cut-outs inspire a new sunglass collection from Akila for the MoMA Design Store. Late in his career, Matisse developed his cut-out technique, what he called “painting with scissors,” composing bold shapes and vivid color relationships from hand-cut, painted paper. That sense of graphic clarity carries into the frames, offered in six styles across three silhouettes and drawing from The Sheaf (La Gerbe) (1953), The Knife Thrower from Jazz (1943–47), and the cover Matisse designed for the museum’s 1951 exhibition catalogue.
Each is handmade from biodegradable acetate and engraved with Matisse’s signature. The collection is available exclusively through the MoMA Design Store.
