About Tom of Finland

As global fascination with bold storytelling and queer identity grows, licensing the art of Tom of Finland offers a powerful opportunity to amplify radical creativity, erotic pride, and inclusive values in product design, brand narratives, and consumer culture. ARS is proud to work with the Tom of Finland Foundation to license his artwork across many categories, enabling partners to honor his vision with integrity, respect, and flair, while ensuring that his influence remains alive for new generations.

Tom of Finland became internationally known for work that boldly challenged conventional views of masculinity, sexuality, and desire. After serving as an anti-aircraft officer during World War II, he studied music at the Sibelius Academy and later worked in advertising, refining his eye for line and composition. His artistic career began in 1957, when Physique Pictorial published his drawings, bringing his vision to an eager audience of gay men searching for imagery that reflected their lives. Over four decades, he produced nearly 4,000 works, often depicting hyper masculine men in erotic scenarios that confronted censorship and cultural taboos. In 1984, alongside Durk Dehner, he co-founded the Tom of Finland Foundation to preserve and celebrate erotic art. Tom passed away in 1991, but his drawings continue to inspire artists, affirm queer identity, and influence contemporary culture. “My whole life long I have done nothing but interpret my dreams of ultimate masculinity and draw them.” This statement captures his artistic clarity. His drawings were never simply about erotic fantasy but about visibility, pride, and the freedom to embrace identity without apology. Licensing his work today extends those qualities into contemporary products and experiences, allowing his bold aesthetic to circulate far beyond galleries and archives.

Licensing Tom of Finland

Through the Tom of Finland Licensing program, brands are able to connect with core values of Radical Freedom of Expression, Empowered Eroticism, and Community & Solidarity. Tom of Finland’s pencil and ink drawings reject cultural expectations and celebrate desire, intimacy, and unapologetic eroticism. His figures, dressed in uniforms, leather, or workwear, are more than erotic archetypes; they embody defiance, humor, and confidence, becoming symbols of strength and community. Equally important is solidarity, honoring LGBTQ+ culture, welcoming allies, and supporting projects that cultivate belonging. These values remain central to the Tom of Finland Foundation at TOM House in Los Angeles, which preserves his vast archive, promotes artists working in erotic traditions, hosts an annual Art & Culture Festival, and runs artist-in-residence programs that make the house a creative, welcoming hub.

Selected depictions by a new set of artists from the Foundation’s collection of erotic and queer art come to life on genderless pieces, ranging from T-shirts, denim and intimate.

In today’s cultural and commercial environment, authenticity and identity shape impact, and Tom of Finland’s drawings provide both in abundance. His compositions, whether rendered in black and white or in vibrant color, demonstrate mastery of form and contrast. They project vitality and confidence, creating a visual language that transcends trends and instantly communicates strength, humor, and sensuality. His art resonates with audiences seeking representation and inclusion, while also appealing to collectors and admirers who value daring, subversive imagery. For brands, his work provides not only a distinctive aesthetic but also a powerful cultural connection that few other visual languages can match.
