Continuing our celebration of March’s Member of the Month, Ruth Orkin, we take a closer look at her masterful ability to capture city life. Orkin’s work thrived in urban environments, where she found rhythm and poetry in everyday moments. From the neon-lit streets of mid-century New York to the winding alleys of Europe, she sought out fleeting gestures—glances exchanged between strangers, children playing in the shadows of towering buildings, the quiet solitude of a figure in a café window. Her keen eye transformed ordinary scenes into cinematic moments, rich with narrative and emotion. Whether photographing celebrities or unknown passersby, Orkin had an unparalleled ability to make her subjects feel both intimate and universal.

A pioneering photographer, Orkin was a master at capturing life as it unfolded, balancing spontaneity with striking composition. Orkin’s work explored themes of independence, adventure, and everyday beauty. Her photographs tell rich, unscripted stories, whether documenting the streets of post-war Europe, the quiet moments of artists at work, or the electric energy of New York City. At a time when few women were recognized in photojournalism, Orkin carved out a space for herself with an unflinching eye and an instinct for visual storytelling. Through her lens, we see the world as she did—full of movement, character, and humanity.

He emerged as a leading artist in the 1960s, transforming steel beams, chains, and salvaged materials into powerful, architectural compositions.

Di Suvero’s sculptures, often towering in scale and visually striking, reflect his deep engagement with movement, balance, and space. His work is prominently displayed in public spaces and museums worldwide, including Storm King Art Center, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Louvre’s Jardin des Tuileries. He also co-founded Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, a vital space for experimental public art.
