Continuing our celebration of April’s Member of the Month, Chloe Wise, we delve into the sculptural works that first brought her acclaim. Wise’s Bread Bag series—hyper-realistic sculptures of bread and breakfast foods refashioned into designer handbags—offers a clever critique of luxury branding and consumer culture. Works such as Pancakes No. 5 (a play on Chanel’s No. 5 perfume) use witty wordplay and absurd pairings to highlight the commodification of both art and everyday objects. By transforming perishable foods into high-end accessories, Wise captures the transient nature of trends and the obsession with status symbols. The sculptures, though visually humorous, provoke deeper reflections on materialism and the way advertising shapes desire. With their glossy surfaces and trompe-l'œil realism, her sculptures toy with the viewer’s expectations, creating a subversive commentary on the artifice of luxury and the aesthetics of excess.

Opening today at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Legion of Honor: "Wayne Thiebaud: Art Comes from Art." This show will explore Thiebaud's reinterpretations of historical and contemporary masterpieces, offering a unique look at his creative process. The exhibition will feature 60 of his reimagined works alongside original paintings by artists like Rembrandt, Manet, and Morandi, as well as rare pieces from Thiebaud’s personal collection, some on public view for the first time. March’s Member of the Month, Ruth Orkin, had a gift for capturing people in their most natural, unguarded states. Portraiture was a key part of her work, but unlike traditional studio photography, Orkin’s portraits were alive with energy and authenticity. She photographed cultural icons like Albert Einstein, Marlon Brando, and Leonard Bernstein, but her lens treated every subject with the same reverence—whether an acclaimed artist or an unknown figure on the street. Orkin often photographed people in motion, caught mid-thought or mid-laughter, giving her work a distinct sense of life. Her images are less about posing and more about presence—portraits that feel like brief glimpses into her subjects’ worlds rather than staged compositions.

We’re excited to welcome Jacob Hashimoto to Artists Rights Society!

Jacob Hashimoto (b. 1973 in Greeley, CO) studied at Carleton College and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. He lives and works in Ossining, NY. Using sculpture, painting, and installation, Jacob Hashimoto creates complex worlds from a range of modular components: bamboo-and-paper kites, model boats, even astroturf-covered blocks. His accretive, layered compositions reference video games, virtual environments, and cosmology, while also remaining deeply rooted in art-historical traditions notably, landscape-based abstraction, modernism, and handcraft.

A pioneering figure in contemporary sculpture, di Suvero is celebrated for his monumental, large-scale works that fuse industrial materials with dynamic, expressive forms. He emerged as a leading artist in the 1960s, transforming steel beams, chains, and salvaged materials into powerful, architectural compositions.

Di Suvero’s sculptures, often towering in scale and visually striking, reflect his deep engagement with movement, balance, and space. His work is prominently displayed in public spaces and museums worldwide, including Storm King Art Center, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Louvre’s Jardin des Tuileries. He also co-founded Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, a vital space for experimental public art.
