This Black History Month, we’re proud to celebrate our February Member of the Month, Geoffrey Holder. A true Renaissance man, Holder was a painter, actor, choreographer, costume designer, and composer whose creative impact spanned multiple disciplines. Born in Trinidad and later based in New York, Holder infused his work with the vibrancy of Caribbean culture and the depth of the African American experience. In his paintings, he sought to depict Black life in all its dimensions—grand and intimate, joyful and contemplative—challenging one-dimensional narratives. His art captures the beauty, strength, and everyday realities of his subjects, offering a nuanced portrayal of Black identity and culture.

We’re thrilled to introduce Zig Jackson, also known by his tribal name Rising Buffalo, as the inaugural feature in our New Member Spotlight series!

A member of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation, Jackson’s work captures the intersection of Indigenous identity, cultural resilience, and contemporary art. His art reflects both personal and collective histories, navigating themes of belonging, visibility, and the ongoing dialogue between tradition and modernity.

Jackson was the first Native photographer inducted into the Library of Congress’ permanent collection and the first Native American to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship in photography. He is best known for his powerful and thought-provoking photography, which challenges stereotypes and sparks vital conversations about representation and self-identity. In his acclaimed series Indian Photographing Tourist Photographing Indians, Jackson humorously and critically examines how Native people are perceived, reclaiming agency and flipping societal norms.

As we continue to highlight Royal Robertson as December's Member of the Month, his art offers a journey into his vibrant mind, inextricably tied to his turbulent personal life. His self-proclaimed title of "Prophet" stemmed from his visions and deeply held religious beliefs, which became even more pronounced following his divorce. The heartbreak and betrayal he experienced after his wife left him were driving forces behind much of his work. These emotions spilled onto his poster board creations, where biblical references and apocalyptic warnings intertwined with deeply personal narratives. His art offers a raw, unfiltered glimpse into his spiraling mental state and the inner struggles that shaped his creative vision.
