Dive into the life and work of Mary Lee Bendolph, one of Gee’s Bend’s most renowned quiltmakers, with Just Look Where He Brought Me From: The Family Quilts of Mary Lee Bendolph. Also, explore the newly expanded Gee’s Bend Heritage Trail with A History of Gee’s Bend from 1816 to the Present.

Known for combining the seafarer’s traditions with nautical history, October Member of the Month, Duke Riley’s pieces not only captivate but also invite viewers to reflect on urban development, environmental destruction, and the contradictions within political ideologies. In his modern take on scrimshaw—traditionally etched into whale teeth—Riley uses repurposed plastic waste like toothbrushes and detergent bottles. These works retain maritime imagery while critiquing the global executives responsible for perpetuating single-use plastics. His multimedia installations offer a blend of fiction and allegory, creating new ways to understand historical and contemporary struggles.

She became a key figure in the Washington Color School, a movement known for its focus on color field painting. Despite the challenges she faced as an African American woman, Thomas's work was celebrated for its emotional depth and innovative style. This New York Fashion Week, Lee Krasner’s paintings served as inspiration for designer Ulla Johnson’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, which made its runway debut on September 8. This collaboration placed Krasner’s iconic paintings “Comet” (1970), “Portrait in Green” (1966), and “Palingenesis” (1971) in prints on dresses, trousers, coats, and two-piece sets, licensed by ARS.

Johnson’s affinity for Krasner goes beyond their shared background as New Yorkers and children of immigrants. Of this collaboration, the designer shared: “[Krasner] talked about wanting her work to breathe and live… Women walk these clothes into life; it’s not a garment, it becomes part of the wearer.”
